Abstract

Modern literature and the results of our own studies on the role of neutrophils in the body of a healthy person and in a patient with diabetes mellitus type 1 (DM‑1) were analyzed. The article presents the latest data on the content, ultrastructure and functions (phagocytosis, netosis, secretion of bactericidal and immunoregulatory compounds) of blood neutrophils in various stages of DM‑1, starting from the preclinical period. Particular attention is paid to the involvement of neutrophils in various reactions of natural and adaptive immunity. There were discussed the new data on the neutrophil infiltration of the exocrine pancreas and islets of Langerhans, as well as the possibility of direct destructive effect of neutrophils on β-cells, which became the basis for the correction of existing hypotheses about the pathogenesis of DM‑1 in humans, i.e. for approval that not only T-cells of adaptive immunity, but also cellular elements of natural immunity, in particular neutrophils, play an important role in the mechanism of DM‑1 onset.
