The Role of Questionnaires in the Evaluation of Quality of Life of Patients with Diabetes Mellitus (Literature Review)

S.I. Ismailov, S.U. Muminova

Abstract

Currently, in many chronic diseases, the study of quality of life (QoL) is of increasing importance. Diabetes mellitus (DM), given the complexity of regimen of control and treatment, as well as numerous somatic manifestations (acute and chronic complications), has a significant impact on QoL. The review deals with the definitions of QoL and related concepts, highlights the major approaches to the study of QoL in DM, provides the list of the most commonly used tools for QoL assessment. There are many techniques for determining the quality of life. All of them can be divided into two categories: nonspecific (used for assessing the quality of life in patients with any disease) and specific ones (designed for its study in patients suffering from a specific disease or condition). Extensive studies of psychopathological manifestations in DM now made it possible to draw conclusions about the negative effects of depression and anxiety on QoL, but a more wide range of neurotic and neurosis-like symptoms concomitant with DM are insufficiently studied, the question about its etiology remains debatable that hamper the development of targeted psychoprophylactic and psychocorrection programs. Modern studies of psychosocial aspects of QoL in patients with DM type 1 reveal the value and the relationship of numerous factors in its structure, reflecting the complex somatopsychic and psychosomatic relations in this disease. However, the close attention of researchers to the integrative indicators of degree of patients’ adjustment is combined, on the one hand, with insufficient knowledge of more subtle and deep mechanisms of psychic adaptation (and its disorders) to life with DM type 1, and, on the other, — with the lack of studies based on an integrated approach to the study of QoL in patients with DM type 1, which implies a comprehensive, person-centered approach to their psychological examination.
